Your Mind’s Eye

Our eyes are compared to windows to our soul because our eyes reveal our thoughts and feelings. Like windows to our soul, our eyes reveal our true emotions and intentions. Our eyes reveal our moods. For example, we can “smile” with our eyes. On the other hand, you can smile with your mouth, but your eyes may reveal that you are unhappy.

In a similar comparison, Jesus compares our eyes to a lamp. Jesus says, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:22-23).”

Light is a metaphor for goodness and purity. Darkness is a metaphor for wickedness. Healthy eyes are eyes that look at and focus on good things, and the result is a good life. Unhealthy eyes are eyes that look at and focus on inappropriate things, and so, darkness enters our souls.

Jesus, however, was talking about more than our physical eyes. Jesus was also talking about our inner eye, our mind’s eye. Our mind’s eye is where we visualize things in our thoughts. In our imagination, we can create mental pictures. Jesus says that when we focus our mind’s eyes on good and positive things, our life will be filled with light, but when we focus on inappropriate and negative things, our life will be filled with darkness.

So what things do you think about? What is the focus of your mind’s eye? The Bible gives us some good advice. The Bible says: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things (Philippians:4:8).”

What you imagine in your mind’s eye will affect the health of your soul. So try your best to focus your thoughts on good, positive, and healthy things so that you will have a good, positive, and healthy life.
