Add the spice

I’m not a hot sauce guru like Sean Evans on the YouTube series Hot Ones, but I do like to spice up my food. My favorite hot sauce is Sriracha sauce. I put Sriracha sauce on a lot of my foods. Not everyone in my family likes their food this spicy, but they all like to add something to their food. One of my daughters likes soy sauce. One of my sons likes ketchup. They all like to sprinkle garlic powder and ground oregano on their pizza. You probably have a favorite spice or seasoning that you like to use to flavor your food too.

Spices are used around the world to add flavor and variety to our foods. Could you imagine trying to cook without garlic or curry or cayenne pepper? Many people regularly add hot sauce or soy sauce or just plain old ketchup to otherwise bland food to make it tastier and more interesting. In a similar way, you and I are the ‘spice’ that God adds to the world to make planet earth an interesting place to live. God gives variety to life by giving each of us unique personalities, different talents, and varied life experiences. Then God puts us in the world to add our uniqueness and the result is the world is a better place. God uses us. He uses you and me and our unique flavors to improve the world and move humanity forward in its social evolution. You have a special role in society that only you can fulfill, and without you, the world is less interesting, less exciting, and more boring.

Just think about trying to eat boiled cabbage without adding anything to give it flavor. We’d probably starve to death without someway to spice up the otherwise bland vegetable. In a similar way, you add a special flavor to those around you to make their lives more palatable.

Maybe you’re not sure what your personality flavor is or how to imbue your special spiciness into the lives of those around you. Like hot peppers that don’t give off their full, zesty flavor until they’ve been heated up, so we sometimes don’t actualize our unique contribution to society until we’ve been ‘fired up’. How do we get fired up? Let me suggest that you start off by being honest with yourself and honest with other people. Don’t try to act like someone else or be something that isn’t really you. Substitute ingredients rarely match the real thing in a recipe. Second, get involved. Be involved with your family. Get to know your co-workers. Talk to your neighbors. Get involved at church or join a civic organization or volunteer in a worthy cause. Only by being active in life can we make a positive difference in our world.

As you broaden your involvement in the world around you, you will add your special blend of personality, talents, and life experiences to the world, and everyone will benefit because of your unique contributions to society.
